Chilli Willi was born on the island of Foehr at Peter Diedrichsen’s – like so many other international sport horses before. As a foal, his breeder sold him to Norbert Boley, or rather the Verband der Züchter des Holsteiner Pferdes e.V., where the Casall son, who is out of the same Lord mare as Camiro (Toni Andre Hansen), was raised. Camiro, by the way, is not the only high profile horse out of Caletta III. Bred to Caretino, she produced the mare One Star, dam to Glock’s Cognac Champblanc (Gerco Schröder).

At the age of two, Chilli Willi was purchased by Axel Abhau for his sales stable, and reached Belgium after several stops. Chilli Willi, the spitting image of his sire Casall, has been at the yard of Nicola Philippaerts for three years now and has undergone a tremendous development since. “He is a very tall horse and needed some more time to mature“, says Philippaerts. “But he is very clever and strong, and by now in very good form and stays clear very often. Chilli Willi might become my best horse next year.”

This year, nine-year-old Chilli Willi has proved several times that he has what it takes, as the Holsteiner stallion attracted attention at several legs of the Global Champions Tour, most recently by placing sixth in the London Grand Prix. The 5* Grand Prix in Brussels in two weeks’ time is scheduled for his next start. “Then it’s time to give him a break“, Philippaerts reveals. Chilli Willi, also used as a breeding stallion in Belgium, is “very popular” with the breeders, his rider says, and admits to being rather fond of him himself. “I like him very much“, the Belgian says, claiming that the stallion’s first foals are very promising.
